Poseidon is one of the 3 top gods in Greek mythology.  These brothers divided the world among themselves. Poseidon's lot was the sea. As sea god, Poseidon is usually seen with a trident.  He is the god of water, horses, and earthquakes and was considered responsible for shipwrecks and drowning.  P

the God of the salt water sea.  Poseidon was the son of Cronus and Rhea. Athena and her uncle Poseidon both liked a certain city in Greece. They both claimed the city and it was decided that the one that could give the finest gift should have it.  The two gods walked up to the Acropolis, leading a crowd of people. Poseidon struck the side of the cliff with his trident and a spring welled up. The people were impressed, but the water was as salty as Poseidon's sea and it was not very useful. Athena's gift was an olive tree, which was better because it gave the people food, oil and wood. Athena named the city Athens.
