The Story of AthenaThe story of Athena's birth is unlike any other. She came out of her father's head fully grown. Her mother was Metis, goddess of wisdom and Zeus' first wife. Zeus was afraid that Metis would have a son who was stronger than him. Zeus turned his wife into a fly and swallowed her. While she was inside him, she started to make her daughter a helmet and robe. The hammering from the helmet being built gave Zeus really bad headaches and he would cry out in anger and pain. Zeus's son ran to his dad's side and split open his skull. Aathena emerged fully grown and wearing her mother's helmet. Athena is always described as having gray eyes which were shining. She would always be with an owl. An owl is a symbol of wisdom and is a bird that can see in the dark. Athena is also usually accompanied by the Goddess of Victory, Nike. Athena is always shown wearing armor and a helmet. Athena and her uncle Poseidon both liked a certain city in Greece. They both claimed the city and it was decided that the one that could give the finest gift should have it. The two gods walked up to the Acropolis, leading a crowd of people. Poseidon struck the side of the cliff with his trident and a spring welled up. The people were impressed, but the water was as salty as Poseidon's sea and it was not very useful. Athena's gift was an olive tree, which was better because it gave the people food, oil and wood. Athena named the city Athens. |
